A video from the Ukraine war is currently circulating on the Internet. In it, a Russian soldier is fighting a drone with a shovel – the outcome is unclear.
Kiev/Moscow – Sometimes it is a lack of ammunition that is to blame, but other circumstances are also responsible for soldiers in the Ukraine war getting into dangerous situations without a functioning firearm. A new video is now said to show a Russian soldier fighting a Ukrainian drone with a shovel. The recording, the authenticity of which cannot be verified, is accompanied by dramatic music and shows the man in a desperate fight that ultimately ends in an explosion. It remains unclear whether the incident was fatal.
Russian soldier fights drone with shovel – video shows dramatic encounter
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, drones have played a crucial role, particularly on the side of the Ukrainian defenders, and have become a key element of the defense strategy. Although Vladimir Putin’s army appeared to be far superior in numbers and the danger that Ukraine could be overrun was initially high, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops repeatedly managed to use ingenuity to stop the Russian advance. Russia has therefore repeatedly suffered significant losses from drone attacks since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Individual soldiers are also repeatedly attacked with kamikaze drones.
The Ukrainian army sometimes used commercially available quadrocopters, equipped them with hand grenades and destroyed several Russian tanks with drones during the Ukraine war. In the Black Sea, too, Russia’s fleet seems almost powerless against unknown floating objects. There are repeated reports of attacks on warships that can be traced back to kamikaze drones. More than two years after the outbreak of the Ukraine war, Kiev now has a veritable drone army that can cover various aspects of the fighting. Drones support reconnaissance, control artillery and are repeatedly used for kamikaze attacks.
Video shows drone attack: Putin’s soldier armed only with a shovel
The new Recording of a Ukrainian drone attackwhich is currently being spread on the Internet by numerous pro-Ukrainian supporters, is now supposed to show another success for the Ukrainian army. The video shows a drone heading towards a Russian fighter in a trench. Where exactly the recording was made remains unclear, as does the authenticity of the clip. According to Newsweek The footage is attributed to a drone pilot from the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade. This was most recently stationed in eastern Ukraine near Kharkiv. Due to Russia’s offensive in the region, the fighting there has recently been particularly fierce.
The video appears to have been created from footage from two drones. A second shot shows the soldier using a shovel to knock the drone away before it explodes. After a cut, a motionless soldier can be seen. It remains unclear whether it is the same man. However, Russian soldiers have repeatedly used shovels to fend off Ukraine’s unmanned aerial vehicles in recent months.
Russia’s soldier probably surprised: Ukraine with further drone success in the Ukraine war
Last year, the British Ministry of Defence announced in an analysis of the Ukraine war that Putin’s soldiers are repeatedly being equipped with shovels and spades to defend themselves at close range due to a lack of ammunition. This was reported by, among others, the BBC. As it goes on to say, the Russian war spade has been an integral part of the Russian reservist units almost unchanged since 1869.
However, due to the fact that the video shows the Russian soldier in a kind of trench, a lack of ammunition seems to have played less of a role in the current case. Rather, it seems likely that the man was surprised by the Ukrainian drone while digging a position. (fbu)
