This week Nicolás Maduro made a statement about the progress of vaccination against covid-19 in Venezuela that has aroused criticism and ridicule, mainly on social networks.
The president assured that in his country 102.6 percent of the population has been vaccinated, both in the first and second doses.
“One year into the vaccination process, we have reached the goal of 102.6 percent, in the first and second doses; full dose,” Maduro said.
However, data from the World Health Organization, updated as of February 18, show that 14,966,671 Venezuelan citizens have been vaccinated with two doses of the covid-19 vaccine, which is equivalent to 49.8% of people with the full pattern.
In this regard, Tamara Taraciuk, acting director for the Americas of Human Rights Watch, said that it is “a nonsense that makes it clear that the official figures are not reliable and contradict what the doctors say.”
