River Plate managed to draw with Colo Colo in Santiago, in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals. The 1-1 draw leaves the series open for the return match, which will be played on September 24.
According to the criteria of
Germán Pezzella had given River the lead in the 43rd minute and Carlos Palacios tied the game for Colo Colo in the 61st.
However, the game was marked by an action in which the Colombian Miguel Ángel Borja was the protagonist and in which a controversy was generated in which many fans of River’s archrival, Boca Juniors, ended up getting involved.
The play in which Miguel Ángel Borja was called for a red card
In the 52nd minute, Borja went to block a ball and ended up sticking his studs into the right ankle of Colo Colo player Emiliano Amor. The VAR did not call the central referee, the Brazilian Raphael Claus, and he did not take any disciplinary measures against the Colombian.
Boca fans immediately flooded social media comparing what happened to Borja with what happened to Peruvian Luis Advíncula in the game against Cruzeiro in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana.
In that game, Advíncula received one of the quickest expulsions in the history of the tournament: barely nine seconds had passed when he committed a serious infraction, very similar to that of Borja, and Colombian referee Wílmar Roldán immediately showed him the red card.
As soon as Borja was saved from being sent off, photos comparing the two actions began to circulate on social media, along with messages asking why the VAR, in charge of the also Brazilian Rodolpho Toski, did not call Claus to review the play.
