Jürgen Klopp must have lost count of how many hugs he received, how many ovations were made with his name and how many expressions of gratitude Liverpool fans accumulated in his last game as coach of the team, which he arrived in October 2015.
The result of the match was the least important: a 2-0 victory against Wolverhampton that was not going to change the third place in which the team finished in the Premier League, behind Manchester City and Arsenal. The ceremony at the end was full of emotion, including a warm hug with Colombian Luis Díaz.
“I am very surprised. To be honest, I thought I would be in pieces, but I’m not,” declared a smiling Klopp, who had to endure a lot not to end up crying in the middle of the tribute he received at the end of the game.
“I’m so happy, I can’t believe it. I’m so happy for the match, this atmosphere, this family. Everything is incredible, thank you very much,” added Klopp. The one who did let his tears be seen was his wife, Ulla Sandrock, in the Anfield stands, even before the game, when the entire stadium applauded him.
The tributes to Klopp began before the game
Scotsman Kenny Daglish, one of Liverpool’s great legends, also stood up to applaud the ‘Normal One’, while, in the stands, a mosaic of Klopp appeared and then took on the colors of the German flag, to the sound of ‘ You’ll Never Walk Alone.
There, with some players crying, like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Klopp was once again honored along with his work, the trophies of the eight titles he won as the team leader.
In his nine years at the club, in addition to the historic 2020 Premier League, Klopp won the Champions League in 2019, the FA Cup in 2022 and the League Cups in 2022 and 2024, as well as a European Super Cup, a Community Shield and a Club World Cup.
