According to what was reported by ERA, a British trade body representing video, music and video retailers video gamesthe latter in 2023 have not been the most important medium in the United Kingdom. Video games have in fact generated lower sales than video entertainment.
Video game revenue in the UK has reached £4.74 billion, with an increase of 2.9% compared to the previous year. This data includes sales of digital and physical video games, for PCs, mobile phones and consoles.
Revenues from video content they grew by 10% to reach £4.9 billion, driven by subscription services such as Netflix, Disney Plus and Apple TV. According to ERA, subscription revenues are worth 89% of the video market.
And the first time since 2012 that video games are not the number one entertainment medium in the UK.
Music and the market as a whole
The revenues of the music they reached £2.2 billion in 2023, up 9.6% on the previous year and on the cusp of the best year ever for music (2001).
Across all three entertainment mediums, 92% of sales were via digital download or streaming.
ERA also illustrated the performance of the various markets compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic. UK video game revenues for 2023 compared to 2019 increased by 29.2%, video by 88.3% and music by 38.8%.
The best-selling console game was EA Sports FC 24. The best-selling video title of the year was Avatar: Way of Water. The best-selling album of the year was The Weeknd's The Highlights, while the best-selling song was Miley Cyrus' “Flowers.”
