During the story, he tells how he witnessed several things, among them, he says that he saw corpses in a part of the route and talks about how complicated it was to pass this terrifying place.
‘You feel the fear, like someone who is watching you’
According to him, the paid guides who accompany them on the route abandoned them after starting the route to Panama. This means that migrants have to manage to locate themselves in an area where there is no type of signal.
“When you go down from Banderas to the first river, you feel the pressure, the fear, as if someone was watching you. You feel something very ugly,” the man continues.
Furthermore, he says that among the people who went with him, there were children. When he arrived the other day, there was a group that left earlier and that, according to him, was a mistake. “In that group there was a family with two girls and no one thought what was going to happen,” points out.
While they were walking, the river they were in rose and, it is even said, that a man drowned trying to cross it while it was rising.
Regarding the group that left first, the man says that they heard screams from the family he was referring to. ““We heard screams, screams, but we kept our mouths shut because there were about eighty of us.”
After being with other guides, they told him that the women, including two minors, were raped by armed men in the middle of the jungle. “The ones who were saved were the ladies. They took the 16-year-old girl (…) then they took the 12-year-old girl.”
The man who tells the story gives the warning again to those who are thinking of illegally emigrating to the United States through that region: “These are things that one says: Why does that happen? “When you see that, you don’t realize how dangerous it is.”
The irregular passage through the Darién, a growing problem
According to figures from the Ombudsman’s Office, in 2023, there were 520,085 migrants who used this irregular route, an increase of more than double the number of people risking their lives in this sector.
Of that number, 113,180 were children and adolescents who are exposed, along with their families, to crimes registered in the jungle such as human trafficking, forced recruitment, extortion, sexual violence and even homicides.
The story cited is just one of the thousands that make up the large number of migrants who experience terrifying events on this irregular route in which crimes against humanity continue to be committed by those seeking a better future in another country.
