When everything was heading towards Rory McIlroy’s first Major title in ten years, The Northern Irishman threw everything away in the last four holes and allowed the American Bryson DeChambeau to win his second crown at the US Open, the third grand slam tournament of 2024.

It was also the second victory in a Major for a LIV Golf player, after the shakeup that this sport suffered with the creation of the circuit financed with funds from Saudi Arabia, which took away several of the figures who were on the PGA Tour. The first had been Brooks Koepka, winner of the PGA Championship last year.
The painful way Rory McIlroy lost the US Open
McIlroy began the final day with a three-shot lead over DeChambeau and until the 15th hole he had everything ready to win. However, from the 16th he began his ordeal, missing a par putt of less than a meter. And in the 18th he repeated the same scene.
On the other hand, DeChambeau, who was only able to finish with par, secured the title in the most difficult conditions possible on the last hole: a bad tee shot, which left the ball far to the left, under a branch and next to a root, and a second shot into a very complicated bunker.
But from there, the American made a spectacular approach to leave the ball given to save par and with that, secure the title with one stroke advantage over the Northern Irishman, who watched the entire scene on television in the clubhouse.
McIlroy lost the opportunity to win his fifth Major, although he has not won one for ten years, since he won two of them in 2014, the British Open and the PGA Championship.
De Chambeau, on the other hand, found revenge after finishing second in the PGA Championship a month ago, behind his compatriot Xander Schauffele, and won his second Major, after having won the 2020 US Open.
“Today (Sunday) is Father’s Day and I want to congratulate you all. Unfortunately my father died two years ago. This victory is for him,” said the new champion.
“I want all of you, in some way, to touch this trophy so you can experience what I feel. You have been part of this journey this week, and I want you to be part of it,” he added, pointing to the audience.
The Colombian Nicolás Echavarría played all four days of a Major for the first time and had a decent closing, after the bad round on Saturday that ruined his chances of finishing in the Top 20 of the tournament.
After Saturday’s 78 shots, the man from Antioquia yesterday delivered a card of 71, one over par, and finished in box 54, with 290 hits (+10).
