After spending five days in a coma, boxer Luis Quiñones, from Colombia, could not resist and died in hospital. The fighter was rushed to hospital after being knocked out in the dispute for the 63.5kg national title, welterweight category, against José Muñoz, in Barranquila.
In the early hours of last Sunday (25), Quiñones had to undergo surgery for a clot in the brain. And after five days in a coma, his death was confirmed.

The Colombian Boxing Federation expressed its grief over the loss. “Unfortunately he lost that battle, we express our sincere condolences to his entire family.”
José Muñoz also spoke about the tragic death of his opponent and published an emotional message.
“I never thought that a dream could turn into a real nightmare. The desire to succeed in life put us on the same path, but because of these things in life and especially the profession we chose, today you are in a situation we never imagined. During the last few days, his image doesn’t stop in my head and I think about the great future that lies ahead. We were sparring partners and friends, which allowed me to get to know all the good things you have to offer as a person and as an athlete,” he said.
The young athlete’s death marks his third in the ring this year. Russian Arest Saakyan, 26, in January and South African Simiso Buthelezi, 24, in June, also died.
