Eric “Rocketman” Teboul he is a veteran French rider of two wheels, and boasts a palmares that counts numerous speed records in practically any racing mode. Today Teboul is no longer a kid, he is sixty years old and already two grandchildren, but this does not mean that his passion for two wheels and for records is waning. And in fact, before hanging up the suit, he decided to honor his veteran career with his latest participation in the European Drag Racing Finals 2022which took place last weekend on the Santa Pod Raceway acceleration track in the UK.
For the last time officially, therefore, Teboul got on his spectacular and artisanal drag bike, a real car that measures about three meters in length and is powered by a simple but effective rocket engine that uses a fuel derived from hydrogen peroxide. It is a very particular propulsion system, which uses the direct method (known as the Walter cycle) to obtain an instant thrust capable of catapulting the bike to over 450 km / h in just 400 meters. Interesting to note how there is no accelerator: there is in fact only a start button, which once pressed generates a reaction that transforms the hydrogen peroxide into water vapor and fires the bike as if it were a rocket.
Therefore, there is no possibility of braking the bike once it is launched at full speed other than to wait for all the fuel in the tank to be drained. Teboul therefore had to best calculate the exact quantity of fuel to be placed in the huge tank located under the belly of the bike, a challenge not too complicated for a veteran of his caliber. Two jumps made by the French driver: in the first he completed the quarter mile in 5.06 seconds and reached a speed of 423 km / h, while in the second he managed to break the 5-second barrier for the first time in the fourth. mile and stop the clock at 4.97 seconds, slightly exceeding 467 km / h at the finish line and thus entering the Guinness Book of acceleration race record.
