The world of cinema and television mourns the loss of Connie Chiumeinternationally renowned South African actress, known for her roles in successful productions such as Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever And Black is King by Beyoncé. Chiume died on Tuesday, August 6, at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, at the age of 72.
Born on June 5, 1952 in Welkom, South Africa, Connie Chiume began her professional career in a completely different field. After working as a nurse, she decided to complete her university studies before discovering her true calling in the world of entertainment. It was only in 1977 that Chiume began her career as an actress, moving to Greece to join the cast of the musical Alone Alone. From there, her career took off, leading her to become one of the most respected figures on South African television thanks to her role in the series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa of 1989.
The big leap towards international cinema was in 2018: he plays Zawavari in the movie Black Panther by Ryan Coogler, a work that marked the history of cinema by winning numerous awards, including the Oscar. Connie Chiume reprised the same role in the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverreleased in 2022, cementing his position as an icon of African cinema. Another important contribution of his career was the interpretation of SarabiSimba’s mother, in Black is King (2020), Beyoncé’s musical film that revisits the soundtrack album of The Lion King.
The news, released by his family via a statement on Instagram, does not clarify the cause of death.
Connie Chiume leaves an indelible legacy in the entertainment world, not only for her artistry, but also for her ability to proudly represent African culture and talent on the global stage. The world of film and television has lost a star, but her light will continue to shine through the works she left behind.
