Vertebrate brain evolution linked to retroviruses

British scientists have discovered that myelin, which forms the electrically insulating sheath of nerve fibers, appeared in vertebrates thanks to retroviruses – infectious agents that are able to integrate their genetic material into the genome of the host organism. Thanks to them, the mass expression of the protein was caused.
