Always on track
Max Verstappen never ceases to amaze. The Dutch champion has accustomed all Circus fans to a certain ‘coldness’ towards the sport that he has been dominating for three seasons now and his passion for ‘racing’ is well known not only on the track but also online, in virtual races .
However, few would probably have expected that at Imola, in what will be his return to the track after the defeat suffered by McLaren and Lando Norris in Miami, Verstappen would almost deliberately seek distractions from the race weekend. Instead, this is exactly what will happen: during the Emilia Romagna GP weekend, in fact, the three-time Formula 1 world champion will also be involved online in the 24 hours of Nurburgring on the platform iRacing with his Redline team.
Passion GT
This was revealed, somewhat ironically, by the Red Bull driver himself during a live streaming with his virtual racing companions. Verstappen’s passion for the endurance race held on the legendary Nordschleife track is well known, both in its ‘virtual’ and real versions. More than once in the past, during interviews, Verstappen had expressed his desire to run this race at some point in his career at the wheel of a real GT3 car.
No fear of McLaren and Ferrari
This double commitment to which Verstappen will undergo is also a response to those who imagined Hasselt’s #1 somehow worried by Norris’ victory in Florida and by the much talked about updates that Ferrari will bring to the track in their home race. It is not the first time that the class of ’97 spends all his free moments of a race weekend in front of a screen playing video games. In 2021, during the crucial period of his world championship duel with Lewis Hamilton, team principal Christian Horner himself revealed how Verstappen had spent hours playing the football video game FIFA before taking part in the United States GP, which he then won. Who knows if this weekend there will be a real-virtual double between Imola and the Nurburgring.
