From a pole position that seemed certain at the start from eighth position in the fourth row on one of the worst tracks to have to recover. Max Verstappen he experienced a frustrating Q3 in the final and decisive stages valid for the conquest of pole position. The last session, the only run on slick tires by the top riders, turned into long runs without stopping and without the usual pit stop to change tires in the middle of the two attempts.
The anomaly of this Q3 betrayed Red Bull, which miscalculated the fuel loaded in RB18 # 1. Verstappen did not complete a lap perhaps already sufficient for pole position to recharge the battery in the last corners and the last attempt ended sadly with the return to the pits ‘forced’ via radio from the wall between the amazement and the anger of the reigning world champion. Obviously the prospect of being disqualified and therefore starting in twentieth position was a risk that Red Bull could not take by stopping the 1997 class and saving at least the eighth position.
Verstappen did not spare criticism of his stable for a calculation error defined as unacceptable: “If I had completed that lap I would not have had enough fuel in the car. These are things that can be checked in Q3 and should be seen first. But clearly it didn’t happen and that’s why I also aborted the previous lap. They told me to give everything in the last attempt, which in hindsight I could not have done. But I clearly can’t see the fuel level on the screen in the car. It is not a good weekend and what happened is not acceptable. Even when I make a mistake it is not acceptable, but on both sides we must try to do the best. What we did today wasn’t enough, it shouldn’t happen. The race is definitely compromised. Here we are not in Spa or Monza where it is easily overcome. For me tomorrow I think it will be frustrating. I will find myself stuck behind so many cars ”.
