Tourists wishing to visit the Italian city of Venice will have to pay a fee for the first time, as part of an experiment starting today, Thursday, aimed at discouraging those who want to visit the city for a day from doing so.
Day visitors will have to pay an entry fee of €5 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time (0630 1400 GMT) unless there is an exemption.
Residents of Veneto, people who work, study or were born in Venice or anyone who has a reservation for accommodation in the city will be excluded from paying the fee.
Children under 14 years old will also be excluded.
In some cases, exemption vouchers will be required. The experiment will continue until the fifth of next May, and then during the weekend until mid-July, for a total of 29 days this year.
A decision will then be made by the end of the year whether these arrangements will become permanent. The influx of visitors from all over the world to the city brings profits to the famous tourist destination. However, the influx of tourists is causing problems for Venice, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
It is estimated that about 15 million visitors visited the city last year. The fine for not paying the entrance ticket ranges from 50 euros to 300 euros.
