Venezuela’s dictatorship has alleged that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken “intends to announce” a “coup d’état” in the country, after the American official said that dictator Nicolás Maduro and “his representatives must not be allowed to cling to power by force”.
“In a crude and vulgar manner, Secretary Blinken intends to announce, through social media, as usual, a coup d’état in Venezuela,” said Foreign Minister Yván Gil, quoted in a note released this Monday (9) by the governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Psuv).
The minister stated that the US “plans” – without specifying which ones – were “pulverized through the vote” in the July 28 elections, in which Maduro was proclaimed the winner for a third consecutive term, a result considered fraudulent by the majority opposition and questioned by a large part of the international community.
In the message, Blinken denounced that “Maduro’s post-election repression has killed or arrested thousands of people,” while “the winning candidate Edmundo González Urrutia remains the best hope for democracy,” he reiterated.
“We must not allow Maduro and his proxies to cling to power by force. The will of the people must be respected,” the US Secretary of State added.
González, candidate of the main opposition coalition – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) -, arrived in Spain on Sunday (8) after leaving Venezuela, where he had been suffering political and judicial persecution after the elections.
Blinken, in a statement, said on Sunday that González’s departure from Venezuela is a consequence of Maduro’s “anti-democratic” measures.
