It was supposed to be a satirical election poster, but it caused a stir online. A post by three CDU politicians from Heidelberg had to be deleted.
Heidelberg – A post by three CDU local politicians in Heidelberg is causing a stir on social networks: In the picture, men with chainsaws are standing in a sunflower field, flanked by the slogan “It’s time to cut down the green waste.” The reactions were prompt, but not as strong as the CDU politicians had hoped.
CDU advertising causes severe criticism: Greens denounce “tasteless” post
“With chainsaws against the Greens?” wrote the Stuttgart Green MEP Michael Bloss on X (formerly Twitter). That was “tasteless,” he said, and demanded: “Apologize.” Words are followed by actions, said Bloss. “With election posters like these, I’m not surprised that political discourse is becoming more brutal.”
The CDU parliamentary group leader in the Heidelberg city council, Nicole Marmé, tried to limit the damage on Sunday (26 May). “If this had gone through my desk, it would not have been released,” she told the German Press AgencyShe stressed that this was not an action by the CDU Heidelberg. The post, which was intended to be satirical, was written by the three local politicians alone and was only on a private account for a few minutes on Saturday.
CDU politicians delete post on the internet and apologize: “That is already AfD like”
The extent and nature of the reactions shocked them. They were completely pigeonholed as right-wing. “Not even the AfD has ever sunk so low,” was one comment on X. “This is marketing for enemies of democracy,” “This is AfD-like,” “And in the end we are surprised when the attacks against the Greens or others (…) continue to increase,” were other comments on the CDU post.
When it became clear that the post had not been well received, the politicians immediately deleted the post and apologized to the Greens in Heidelberg, Marmé told the SWR“This was not agreed with the CDU parliamentary group and does not represent CDU values,” the politician continued. (bb/dpa)
