Although in 2023 we saw the launch of such acclaimed titles as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldu's Gate III, Resident Evil 4 and more, a new report has revealed that most players invested more time in games old during the last year.
According to the second annual report of newzoo focused on the video game industry, just 66 titles represented 80% of all gaming time the public invested in in 2023, of which 60% were focused on titles six or more years old.
From this list, Fortnite, GTA V, League of Legends, Minecraft and Roblox accounted for 27% of all playing time during 2023. Even the playing time dedicated to experiences defined as “new”, with two or fewer years on the market, is made up of annualized sequels. At this point, it has been noted that titles such as FIFA and Madden represent 23% of this selection.
The report states that only 8% of play time was spent on new, non-annual experiences like Tears of the Kingdom either Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This makes it clear that the market is focused on long-lasting experiences, which are capable of retaining users' attention for years after their launch, while new single player titles have lower retention. On related topics, $70 dollar games could be coming to an end.
Editor's Note:
With this information in hand, it is no surprise that most companies are looking for the next Fortnite or game as a service that is capable of retaining a good player base for years. However, it will always be the single player titles with a defined ending that we will remember the most.
