“There was a mass shooting tonight at Greenwood Park Mall,” said Mark Myers, mayor of the town of Greenwood, about 10 miles south of Indianapolis, the state capital.
“The death of four people has been confirmed,” said Jim Ison, Greenwood police chief, who clarified that the balance includes the author of the massacre.
The assailant, who has not been identified, entered the restaurant area of the mall around 6:00 p.m. (10:00 p.m. GMT) and opened fire with a rifle, Ison said.
Among the injured was a 12-year-old girl, he added.
Jim Ison praised the intervention of the armed bystander that ended the attack, calling the 22-year-old a “good Samaritan”.
“The real hero of the day is the citizen who was legally carrying a firearm in that restaurant area and was able to stop this shooter almost as soon as he started,” he said.
“This has shaken us to the core. It’s not something we’ve seen before in Greenwood,” he said.
“It’s absolutely horrendous,” the police chief said.
Greenwood police on their Facebook page asked witnesses to the shooting to contact them for information.
It is the latest incident in a wave of gun violence sweeping the United States, where some 40,000 gun deaths a year are recorded, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Moments of terror were experienced in a shopping center in Indiana, after a shooting was recorded where an individual entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several bullet magazines.

The attack came a couple of weeks after a gunman opened fire at a Fourth of July parade in an affluent Chicago suburb that left seven dead and at least three dozen wounded.
It also took place after two massacres in May: 10 African-Americans were shot to death in a supermarket in Buffalo, in the state of New York; and 19 children and two teachers were killed at an elementary school in Texas.
The recent rise in gun violence has reignited the harsh debate over gun regulation in the country.
A House committee will vote this week for the first time in nearly 20 years on a bill to ban assault rifles.
