In 1957, in the middle of the Cold War and while the space race between the USSR and the United States was launching, American federal authorities created the National Radio Quiet Zone, an area of 33,000 km² in the northeast of the country, in Virginia. But today this “zone of radio silence” is threatened, with consequences for scientists and those who have decided to live in it.
