Senator Mark Kelly is in favor of allowing the use of US weapons in the Ukraine war on Russian soil. This would be convenient for the Kursk offensive.
Washington DC/Kiev – In the USA, pressure is growing on Joe Biden’s government to lift restrictions on Ukraine regarding the use of American weapons on Russian soil. US Senator Mark Kelly, Democrat from Arizona, had expressed his Kyiv Independent and stressed that the limitations must be reconsidered. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long been trying to obtain permission from the US government – especially to use the powerful ATACMS missiles against targets within Russia.
Kelly, who alongside Tim Walz is considered a possible running mate of Kamala Harris was traded, said the Kyiv Independent: “Given the conditions near the front lines and the territory that Ukraine is slowly losing, I think it is appropriate to reassess this and consider allowing Ukraine to move our weapons deeper into Russia to use.”
Although Ukraine’s Kursk offensive has been successful so far, Russia can still hold its position on the Ukraine front and advance in some places. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had emphasized at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Ramstein that Ukraine would have no strategic advantage from using US weapons directly against Russia, as Reuters reported.
US Senator wants to lift restrictions on US weapons in Ukraine war
He continued on the situation in Ukraine: “There are a lot of targets in Russia – it’s a big country, obviously. And Ukraine has a lot of capabilities in the form of UAVs (unmanned aircraft, Editor’s note:) and other things to attack these targets.”
Kelly disagrees. At the party conference of the Democrats Kelly had addressed the topic of Ukraine and US weapons. CBSNews he said: “It is appropriate to continue to examine what needs exist, how we can adapt and what new weapon systems we will provide to them.” So his position is not a coincidence.
Kamala Harris would continue to support Ukraine as president
Kamala Harris, as America’s next president – should she be elected in November – is also prepared to continue to fully support Ukraine. “I know the vice president very well and you know what position she takes on this issue of supporting Ukraine. I think you will see a very similar approach, probably not identical,” said Kelly. Nevertheless, there are concerns about a possible spread of the conflict. US troops in Ukraine are definitely out of the question.
The renewed discussion about US weapons and long-range weapons against Russia came about after Ukraine presented a list of possible targets in Russia to the US government. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov is said to have presented the list to his US counterpart Austin in order to convince the US government to allow Ukraine to use the ATACMS missiles directly against Russia, as Politico reported. So far, however, the US position on the issue has not changed. (sure)
