A professor of humanities, English and creative writing at Wake Forest University, located in the state of North Carolina, in the United States, resigned from her post “for personal reasons” last week, a month after posting a message on social media justifying the Hamas terrorist attack carried out against Israeli civilians attending a music festival on October 7th.
According to information from Fox News, the teacher, whose name is Laura Mullen, wrote on her account on in the open air”, she would also be “tempted to shoot the Israeli party”. Around 260 young people were massacred by Hamas terrorists during the attack on the festival and several others were taken hostage to Gaza.
Mullen’s post sparked outrage within and outside the academic community, and she received letters from parents calling for her dismissal. Despite the pressure to fire Mullen, Wake Forest University stated at the time that it “respected the professor’s right to freedom of expression”, even if it did not “agree with her opinions” and chose to keep her on its teaching staff. Despite her defense, Mullen even complained that the institution “threw her to the wolves” and did not “support her in the face of the criticism” she was receiving.
The professor deleted the message that caused outrage among the population just a week after it was published, claiming that it was “harming the Muslim population” in the USA. At no point did she apologize for the post.
In interviews with local media, Mullen also said that he received some “supportive” emails from students.
According to information from Fox News, Mullen is not the only U.S. university professor who has expressed sympathy for the Hamas terrorists, who killed hundreds of people in the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. Several other university professors, who are even part of the faculty at the prestigious Cornell University, have also made statements on social media trying to “justify” the Hamas terrorist attacks and are under FBI investigation or dismissal.
After the Hamas attacks, US college campuses became the scene of heated debates about the conflict in the Middle East, and some students, especially those of Jewish origin, reported cases of violence and intimidation.
