Country says measure was adopted to limit risks after bombing near US military base
US President Joe Biden on Tuesday (23.Aug.2022) commanded air strikes against Iranian-backed groups in Syria. In a statement (intact in English – 70 KB), the military’s Central Command said the attacks were made to protect US forces from attacks by Iranian-backed groups.
The offensives to which the agency refers were carried out on August 15, when missiles landed near the US military base Green Village, which is close to the border with Iraq, in northeast Syria.
“The United States has taken proportionate and deliberate measures designed to limit the risk of escalation and minimize the risk of casualties.,” Colonel Joe Buccino, a spokesman for Central Command, wrote in the note.
Also according to the soldier, “the United States does not seek conflict, but will continue to take necessary steps to protect and defend our people”. Buccino did not mention whether the attack left casualties.
The US maintains around 900 troops in Syria. Most of it is at the At-Tanf base and oil fields in the east of the country.
NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
At the same time, several nations, including the USA, are trying to save the nuclear deal Iranian. One of the main obstacles is the imposition of sanctions on Tehran by Washington.
In 2015, Iran limited its uranium enrichment program in exchange for an end to international sanctions. But 3 years later, Donald Trump, then US president, reneged on the agreement and reinstated sanctions on the country. With that, Tehran resumed part of its nuclear activity.
The lifting of the US economic blockade on Iran is a demand by the Iranian government to accept the new nuclear deal proposed by the JCPoA (Global Joint Action Plan), which involves, in addition to the 2 countries, China, France, United Kingdom, Russia and Germany.
