Kevin Durant breaks 34-year-old Jordan mark
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
Basketball: Durant closes 34-year-old Jordan brand
Kevin Durant has retired a 34-year-old brand from basketball legend Michael Jordan in the North American professional league NBA. The Brooklyn Nets superstar scored at least 25 points in the 109-107 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in game 16 of the season.
The last time Jordan made such a start was with the Chicago Bulls in the 1988/1989 season. The NBA record, however, will be hard to beat: Wilt Chamberlain had at least 25 points in all 80 regular-season games in 1961-62.
Durant ended the game with 35 points, becoming the 19th NBA player to break the 26,000 point mark. However, Durant missed his last shot shortly before the final siren, only Royce O’Neal’s tip-in brought victory. For the Nets it was the seventh win in 16 games, for Portland only the fifth loss in 15 games.
Brooklyn played for the eighth time without Kyrie Irving, who was banned after an anti-Semitism scandal – and won for the fifth time. The seven-time NBA Allstar posted a link to a film on social media with content considered anti-Semitic and was heavily criticized for it. Against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, Irving looks set to return.
Football: Green Bay and quarterback Rodgers lost again
The chances of the Green Bay Packers and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the playoffs in the North American football league NFL are getting smaller. The team around the one-time Super Bowl champion lost on Thursday (local time) against the Tennessee Titans 17:27 (6:14), for the Packers it was the seventh loss in the eleventh game of the season.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, on the other hand, led the Titans to their seventh win in ten games of the season. The 34-year-old also won the quarterback duel with Rodgers (38).
In his second game after recovering from an ankle injury, Tannehill impressed with two touchdown passes and a total of 333 yards thrown. At the other end, Rodgers also threw two touchdown passes, each to Packers league newcomer Christian Watson, and passed for 227 yards.
Tannehill was responsible for Tennessee’s 7-0 lead with his first touchdown pass to Dontrell Hilliard in the middle of the first quarter.
The Titans set a team best of the season with 27 points and continue to lead the AFC South standings.
The NFL moved the game between the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns from Orchard Park, New York, to Detroit. The reason for this is the expected onset of winter in western New York, with snowfall of up to one meter high. The game is scheduled to take place in Detroit on Sunday afternoon (local time) as scheduled.
Basketball: Former Spurs psychologist and NBA pro Primo settle lawsuit
Former team psychologist Hillary Cauthen (40) has settled her legal dispute with the NBA franchise San Antonio Spurs and ex-player Joshua Primo over alleged exhibitionism. Cauthen had accused 19-year-old Primo of having exposed himself to her on nine counts.
Now, “everyone involved has agreed to resolve the issue,” Cauthen’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, told the San Antonio Express-News. Cauthen also sued Spurs, saying the franchise ignored reports.
In July of this year, the San Antonio Spurs had initially separated from Cauthen. At the beginning of November, the franchise then announced the separation from Primo without giving a reason. The Canadian is considered a huge talent and had a decent debut season for the Texans.
Basketball: Schröder is about to make his comeback with the Lakers
National basketball player Dennis Schröder sees no advantage in the Los Angeles Lakers’ poor start to the season before his expected comeback. After injuring a ligament in his thumb, Germany’s captain is expected to appear for the first time this NBA season in the game against the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night for the record champions, who have lost 10 of 13 games so far. “I want my team to win every time, whether I play or not. Of course it wasn’t good. I’m coming in now and trying to turn that around and play well. But if they had played well from the start and were now 7: 3 wins, then of course I would have been happy too,” Schröder told the German Press Agency on Thursday (local time).
After his almost four week injury break, he feels good. “In the end I needed the break anyway because of the Eurobasket and I was sick before I came to LA,” he said. He would have liked to have played on November 13, but after deliberations he decided to have the extra days in training. “Of course I feel better now than four days ago, we took our time and we’ll be ready tomorrow.”
Football: Buffalo Blizzard – NFL game moved to Detroit
The US professional football league NFL is fleeing a snowstorm that was expected in Buffalo on Thursday evening (local time). Sunday night’s game between the Bills and the Cleveland Browns will be moved to Detroit. The league confirmed that. Most recently, a Buffalo Bills game was moved to the city 350 km to the west in 2014, also at that time due to heavy snowfall.
The decision was made “with public safety and caution in mind” and “in consultation with the Buffalo Bills and local and state authorities as the region prepares for the storm,” the NFL said.
Buffalo is more frequently affected by snowstorms due to the so-called “Lake Snow Effect”. The effect occurs when cold winter winds blow across large lakes warmed up in summer. Buffalo is located in upstate New York on the east side of Lake Erie on the border with Canada.
Ice hockey: Seider scores in victory in a duel against storm
National ice hockey player Moritz Seider from the Detroit Red Wings has won the duel against Stanley Cup winner Nico Sturm in the North American professional league NHL. The Red Wings defeated the San Jose Sharks 7-4.
Defender ace Seider scored the important goal to make it 5:4 in the last third (54th). It was the first win after four consecutive defeats for Seider and his team, while San Jose suffered another defeat after three wins.
Seider was on the ice for 21.17 minutes with the Red Wings, center Sturm was on the ice for 12.40 minutes with the team from California.
When the Seattle Kraken beat the New York Rangers 3-2 in extra time, the home side were missing German international goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer due to a lower body injury.
