Equanimeous St. Brown signs with the Saints
Equanimeous St. Brown has found a new team in the US professional football league NFL. The New Orleans Saints signed the wide receiver without a club, making it the third stop in the top league for the 27-year-old German-American.
The older brother of top receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (24/Detroit Lions) previously played for the Green Bay Packers (2018 to 2021) and the Chicago Bears (2022 to 2023). St. Brown hasn't made his big breakthrough yet, but he still managed two touchdowns in 60 games.
The Saints, who have recently missed the play-offs three times in a row, are not very strong behind their top pass receiver Chris Olave.
Seider suffers setbacks in the play-off race with Detroit
Moritz Seider suffered a bitter defeat with his Detroit Red Wings in the NHL play-off race. On Thursday (local time) Detroit lost its away game against direct rivals Pittsburgh Penguins 5:6 (2:2, 1:2, 2:1) after overtime.
Both teams had the same number of points before the duel, and with the win the Penguins secured the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference with 86 points. The Red Wings received one point from the defeat after overtime and, like the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers, now have 85 points and would therefore currently miss the play-offs in the North American ice hockey league.
The Red Wings trailed 5-3 early in the third period but scored two goals in the final seven minutes to force overtime. Thanks to Erik Karlsson, Pittsburgh scored the winning goal after 100 seconds. Seider prepared Jeff Petry's goal to make it 3-4 at the end of the second period.
Seider received support from JJ Peterka. The 22-year-old attacker achieved a 4:2 (1:0, 1:1, 2:1) home win over the Washington Capitals with the Buffalo Sabers, Peterka remained without a goal in the third home win in a row.
Nico Sturm was successful with the San Jose Sharks 3:1 (1:1, 2:0, 0:0) against the Seattle Kraken, and Sturm was also not involved in any of the Sharks' goals. Goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer was not used for Seattle. Tim Stützle missed his Ottawa Senators' win against the Tampa Bay Lightning due to injury and missed the fourth game in a row.
Basketball: Hartenstein defeats NBA leaders Boston with the Knicks
The New York Knicks led by German basketball player Isaiah Hartenstein have achieved an important victory in the NBA play-off race. On Thursday (local time), the Knicks defeated the Boston Celtics 118:109 (69:48), meaning New York inflicted its first home defeat on the best team in the NBA after 13 home wins in a row.
The Knicks remain third in the East in the North American Basketball League, but after their third success in a row they only have one win less than the second-placed Milwaukee Bucks in front of them.
The Knicks pulled away with a 17-0 run at the end of the second quarter, at times leading by 31 points. It didn't matter that the guests lost the final period 18:38. The best Knicks thrower was Jalen Brunson with 39 points. Hartenstein contributed eleven points, 13 rebounds and six assists to the success.
The Golden State Warriors pushed the Los Angeles Lakers out of ninth place in the West with a 100:92 (49:46) away win against the Portland Trail Blazers. As things stand, both teams would meet in the pre-qualification for the play-offs . The guests turned the game around with an 11-0 run in the final minutes, superstar Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
The New Orleans Pelicans scored a 135:123 (64:58) away win against the Sacramento Kings to maintain sixth place in the West, which would mean secure playoff qualification. The Kings remain eighth, but the Warriors and Lakers behind them have the same record with 45 wins and 35 defeats.
Basketball: Nowitzki “angry” about Doncic: “Breaks every one of my records”
When Dirk Nowitzki ended his career with the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic followed in his footsteps – and is now even threatening to outdo the Würzburger. “Man, I’m so angry. He breaks every one of my records,” Nowitzki said on the show “NBA Unplugged with Kevin Hart” – and laughed.
Doncic, only 25 years old, is number one in the NBA professional basketball league this season with an average of 33.9 points. It wasn't until the end of January that the Slovenian scored an incredible 73 points against the Atlanta Hawks, the fourth-highest score in league history. Only Wilt Chamberlain (100/78) and Kobe Bryant (81) were better.
“We saw in the first season that the sky is the limit for him,” said club icon Nowitzki about Doncic. “He can do everything, he has the complete package. Every year I say: This boy can't possibly get any better. And then next year he actually comes back with more in his repertoire.”
Former Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently said Doncic was better than Nowitzki. “Luckily Mark doesn't know anything about basketball,” Nowitzki joked, “so he doesn't know what he's seeing.” The 2011 NBA champion, an agent for the Mavs, gets along great with Doncic. Both were still on the floor together for Dallas.
