National player Theis with Boston Celtics before reaching the final
Dusseldorf While most Europeans are asleep, the North American professional leagues are buzzing. What Happened That Night in American Football, Basketball, and Ice Hockey.
Hockey: Storm team misses early decision in NHL quarterfinals
The Colorado Avalanche lost their early entry into the Western Conference Finals of the North American ice hockey league NHL. At home, the team of German professional Nico Sturm lost 4:5 after extra time to the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday (local time). In the series, however, Colorado still leads 3-2 victories and still only needs one win to reach the semifinals of the NHL.
After a strong start from the hosts with a 3-0 lead, the Blues initially equalized to 3-3 in the last third. After Colorado, who still had to do without the ailing storm, took the lead again, Robert Thomas equalized with 56 seconds from the end and sent the game into overtime. There Tyler Bozak let the blues cheer.
The Avalanche have their next chance to win the series in St. Louis on Friday.
Basketball: National player Theis with Boston Celtics before the final
National basketball player Daniel Theis is close to reaching the final of the North American professional league NBA with the Boston Celtics. The record champions won game five at the Miami Heat thanks to a strong second half 93-80 and took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.
In the home game on Friday, the Celtics have the first match point in the final of the Eastern Conference, a decisive seventh game would take place again in Miami on Sunday.
Theis was on the bench for the entire season and was without playing time for the first time in the series. Match winner for Boston was top star Jason Tatum with 22 points, twelve rebounds and nine assists, Jalen Brown collected 25 points as the best thrower. “We mustn’t think it’s over,” Tatum said. “The task isn’t over yet.”
It would be the first final for the Celtics since 2010, they won their 17th and last championship title so far in 2008. In the series against Miami they turned a 1-2 deficit, before that they eliminated defending champions Milwaukee Bucks. “It’s a great opportunity,” said Brown. “We have the opportunity to create something special.” The best pitcher of the heat was Bam Adebayo with 18 points.
The Dallas Mavericks with the German national player Maximilian Kleber and the Golden State Warriors determine the second finalist in the west. The Warriors had the next match point of the series thanks to a 3-1 lead Thursday night.
Football: NFL pro Kaepernick possibly before return
Football professional Colin Kaepernick could face a return to the American NFL league. The quarterback, who was last on the field in 2017, has been invited to a trial by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to consistent media reports. The 34-year-old would become a colleague of German professional Jakob Johnson, who joined the team in the spring.
Kaepernick had recently shown his current level of performance during a training session with NFL scouts. The teams had not offered the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback a new contract after kneeling at the national anthem. Only the Seattle Seahawks invited him to a trial in 2017, but no agreement was reached.
Kaepernick’s peaceful protest against racism and police violence caused a stir. In the meantime, there was an out-of-court settlement with the NFL over his complaint that he was subsequently discriminated against. Kaepernick, once considered one of the best playmakers in the league, had led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl final at the end of the 2012 season.
