Aitana, Feid and Manuel Turizo started as favorites of the night with six nominations each. THE40 Music Awards Santander, which were presented this Friday at the WiZink Center in Madrid, did not leave them empty-handed: Aitana won two awards and Feid and Turizo three each. Camilo, Ozuna, Loreen and Lola Índigo were also awarded. Shakira won one of the Golden Music Awards, which recognizes the career of a personality, and even without being present she turned out to be one of the phenomena of the evening: the Colombian sent a video of gratitude and also a performance. Those who did collect the Golden Award from her were Ozuna and the members of Take That, who also performed two songs as a prelude to their new tour.
Ozuna was the first of the artists to perform at a gala where the announcers Tony Aguilar, Cristina Boscá and Dani Moreno, The rooster, were masters of ceremony, along with other Spanish and Latin American colleagues. The WiZink Center chanted the verses of their greatest hits: “I tried you again / Your mouth does not lose the taste of candy,” from the song Candy; or “It was for one day and it stayed”, from the song Eva Longoria, to which those present responded “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.” Everyone who knows the song will have put a rhythm to it when reading it.
That’s it. The Puerto Rican came out, broke it —as they say in the slang of the reggaeton players— and the rest of the artists have already found a dedicated audience. Ozuna, who has 12 Grammy Awards, was nominated in five categories, but ultimately won only two: best Latin urban collaboration for hey more, with Feid; and a Golden Award for its dissemination of urban genres, but also for its supportive nature. “I love Spain very much, I am grateful to LOS40, the urban genre and the new generation,” she said in reference to many of those present. “To the new generation, keep fighting.”
Among the great performances of the night was that of the group Take That, which aroused the nostalgia of those over 30 years old, especially when they sang Patience (2006). The song marked the return of the group after 10 years of hiatus. And the band, now converted into a trio formed by Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, has been deconstructed and rebuilt on multiple occasions since its launch in 1989.
Now they are on the verge of publishing their ninth album, This Life, on November 24. There are already two advances, Brand New Sun and Windows. It will be followed by a European tour that will pass through Spain in July. The British took home the Golden Music Award for “their influence on music and pop culture.” They thanked LOS40 for having accompanied them during these more than 30 years, as well as the fans.
Shakira stellar
Shakira gave thanks through a video in which she highlighted the support she has received in her journey, but especially in the last year: “It has been one of the most beautiful, not only of my career, but for Hispanics.” The Colombian, the woman who has achieved the most number 1s on LOS40 and the most house awards, highlighted: “What better way to use our voice than through our art.” The jury highlighted not only her figure as a singer, but also her social work, through her foundation Pies Descalzos, and her strength to “break stereotypes and genders.”
The Swedish Loreen, twice winner of Eurovision and now also a Music Award in the international artist category, also appeared on the LOS40 stage. Loreen competed against artists like Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith and Taylor Swift. “I didn’t expect this, thanks to the universe and my family,” she said, surprised by the size of the audience she later sang to.
Before her, Emilia, one of the exponents of urban music in Argentina, performed. The singer is part of the same generation as the omnipresent Bizarrap, Tiago PZK or Duki, award-winning Latin live artist. The rapper was one of the first to make the leap from the cockfights in the parks of Buenos Aires to the recording studios. Emilia was later followed by her compatriot María Becerra, who has achieved the milestone of selling all the tickets to the largest stadium in Argentina, the Más Monumental, in just one hour. Both Emilia and María Becerra walked away with a prize.
New categories
The pulse of urban music in the industry has had its impact on LOS40 Music Awards Santander, not only in the winners, but also in the categories. This year new recognitions have been created: best urban revelation artist in the Spain category, which was won by Saiko; and best urban collaboration (the aforementioned Ozuna and Feid); and best urban song in the global Latin category, which went to Classy 101also by Feid, who vindicated and brought Young Miko on stage, who accompanies him on the song and who turned out to be a revelation Latin artist.
Camilo was one of the most anticipated performances judging by the shout from the audience when his name was called. The scream was repeated again when, by surprise, the artist and his wife Eva Luna also came out on stage to perform one of her most popular songs, Indigo, name of the daughter they have in common. The artist, recognized with the award for best Latin, also took advantage of one of his songs to remember that “a tour is coming in Spain”; although we have to wait until 2024.
Among the awarded artists is also Lola Índigo, for her tour Dragon. The singer, a regular at LOS40 Music Awards, offered one of the great shows of the night with a staging where, as is her custom, her team of dancers was the protagonist, this time along with a great audiovisual of fire.
Also on stage were Ana Mena, Abraham Mateo and Chanel, who won an award for their song Clavaito; Nil Moliner, Álvaro de Luna, David Bisbal or Maikel Delacalle. There was also time for ballads, with Ton Odell, who performed on piano Black Friday and Another Love. The song came out in 2013, but social networks have extended its life. Odell won the award for best live artist in the international category. In the same section, the best song went to Dua Lipa, with Dance The Night; and the international album award went to Taylor Swift for Midnights.
