A week ago I witnessed the presentation of the “Mobility Project for Mazatlan” convened by Coparmex and the inter-chamber, without a doubt a very successful exercise in citizen participation.
Urban mobility is essential for the development of a city, in Mazatlan as in many other cities in Sinaloa, the lack of foresight and planning in the face of natural growth has generated a severe exponential problem of road chaos with direct effects on the environment, late arrivals to work centers, studies, difficulty in transferring ambulances, firefighters and police among many other issues; immediate attention is necessary with the shared effort between authorities and civil society.
Moving within the city to access the different services and carry out activities is part of everyday life and that is why urban mobility becomes a basic need for the population.
There are different means of transportation but also different socio-demographic characteristics such as economic level, physical status, gender or place of residence that may affect access to a large majority of people, generating a source of inequality and marginalization of some sectors.
The presentation of the “Mobility for Mazatlan” project was visionary, placing the people who must move and the means to do so as the center of the theme; making clear the importance of urban planning for the benefit of economic development and road education and awareness.
This great project has already begun in Mazatlan with a road awareness and education campaign, an urban acupuncture proposal and a comprehensive road study and improvement of public transport.
According to IMPLAN 2022, public transport in Mazatlán has 43 routes, 618 units and 220 thousand daily users and actions are being taken to improve it through driver training, service improvement and the preferential lane project; the latter refers to the delimitation of a lane for urban public transport on Av. Ejército Mexicano-international highway México 15 (the busiest road for urban trucks) that would bring some benefits such as shorter travel times, decrease in the number of traffic accidents, less pollution, improvement of the urban image and installation of urban bus stops
I have no doubt that as more people find out about this great project they will want to participate actively, it is designed so that we all contribute our skills and time to promote it and achieve great results for a beautiful and orderly city.
