Yesterday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that one of its employees was killed and 22 others were injured in an Israeli bombing of a food distribution center in the eastern part of the city of Rafah.
The agency said in a statement: “At least one UNRWA employee was killed and 22 others were injured when Israeli forces bombed a food distribution center in the eastern part of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.” In the statement, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said: “The attack on one of the few remaining UNRWA distribution centers in the Gaza Strip comes at a time when food supplies are running out, hunger is widespread, and in some areas, the matter is turning into famine.” He added: “Every day, we share the coordinates of all our facilities throughout the Gaza Strip with the parties to the conflict, and the Israeli army received the coordinates, including the coordinates of this facility, yesterday.”
Lazzarini stressed that “the United Nations, its employees, its buildings and its assets must be protected at all times.”
He pointed out that “since the war began last October 7, attacks on United Nations facilities, convoys and employees have become common, in blatant disregard for international humanitarian law.”
