University of Sharjah Hospital succeeded in saving the life of an 88-year-old elderly citizen, who came to the hospital with severe angina, which necessitated a complex cardiac catheterization.
For his part, the consultant and head of the Cardiac Catheterization Department at Sharjah University Hospital, Dr. Osama Mahdi, said that the hospital received the case of an elderly patient with angina pectoris accompanied by a rapid heartbeat, in addition to changes in the ECG indicating severe ischemia involving the heart wall.
He added that the patient has a history of severe narrowing of all coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle, as the degree of blockage is 95% direct in the left coronary artery, 85% in the left anterior descending artery, 99 percent in the reflex artery, and 99 percent in the right coronary artery.
He continued, “The patient tried to perform arterial replacement surgery in other hospitals in the country, but he was unable to do so due to his advanced age and poor health in general, which prevents him from being subjected to general anesthesia. seriously.”
The attending physician was able to open three arteries for the patient, especially the left part of the coronary circulation, which led to the end of the acute crisis and the stabilization of the patient’s condition; The catheterization procedure for the patient was very difficult and complicated, as the patient suffered from ventricular acceleration and low blood pressure in conjunction with the beginning of the catheterization procedure, which prompted the treating medical team to install a balloon supporting the heart in the aorta through the left femoral artery.
The patient stayed in the hospital for four days, and this case is considered one of the most difficult cases of therapeutic catheterization in the world, as it indicates the extent of the development reached by medical institutions in the UAE in terms of the availability of capabilities, devices and distinguished medical staff.
In the same context, the CEO and member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Sharjah Hospital, Dr. Ali Obaid Al Ali, said: “The hospital administration has worked to provide distinguished medical cadres in the departments of catheterization and interventional cardiology, as well as the latest technologies of devices, which qualified us to receive hundreds of cases from citizens, residents and arrivals. For treatment from outside the country, the hospital also achieves success numbers that match the high rates of international standards.”
