The United States recorded a record 100,000 overdose deaths in one year during the pandemic.
Between April 2020 and April 2021, the country recorded 100,306 fatal overdoses, an increase of 28.5% over the same period last year, with 78,056 deaths. The information is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was released by the AFP agency.
“These overdoses are mostly caused by synthetic opiates, especially illegally manufactured fentanyl,” CDC’s Deb Houry told a news conference.

“My administration is committed to doing everything in our power to treat addiction and end the overdose epidemic,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.
The US government said it plans to improve access to naloxone, an antidote capable of containing an overdose.
“It’s time to face the fact that the crisis is getting worse. We need to put all our hands to work,” Health Secretary Xavier Becerra told reporters.
