According to the researcher Antony Brown, the ‘crannog’ are artificial islands built inside a lake, most of these were built in the territories we know today as Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
However, the curious thing about all of this is that these constructions date back to 4,000 BC, more than 6,000 years ago! And they would have been made of stone and wood, as revealed by the National Geographic portal.

Although these constructions have been studied in detail, there are still several doubts that they have not been able to resolve, since the studies show different contradictions. The scientists found remains there that allowed them to identify that they sacrificed animals, for purposes related to both food and rituals.
This allowed them to understand that, contrary to how it came to be thought, ‘crannogs’ were not cemeteries, but were places for meetings and events.
The ‘crannog’, the private islands of prehistory
The researchers discovered that these islands, located in the lakes of the area, were the scene of great banquets and events from the Bronze Age (1,700 years BC), which was the time when most of them were built, and their use was constant until the Middle Ages (from the 5th to the 15th century AD).

What researchers have not yet been able to identify has been the reason for their abandonment, as it is believed that they were prestigious party sites and excesses for the rich of the time.
The origin of the term
A study from the University of Cambridge indicates that the ‘crannog’ were made with whatever material was available. But the term ‘crannog’, in Irish, is derived from the word tree.
The settlers built them by weaving a bed of stone or wood that could support the houses, and all that they shared inside, thus demonstrating what would be the beginnings of complex architecture for that time.
