The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has named doctor Mauricio González, better known as Dr. Mau, as its most recent ambassador to Mexico. The scientist is tasked with promoting the health and nutrition of girls, boys and adolescents in the country.
Fernando Carrera Castro, UNICEF Representative in Mexico, states that “Dr. Mau has become a trusted, dynamic and accessible source of health and wellness information for millions of families. “He will use his experience and national and international recognition to advocate for the rights of children and ensure their well-being.”
González is a health specialist with triple specialty in internal, emergency and obesity medicine. He is part of a roundtable of health communicators at the White House. He has become one of the most influential Spanish-speaking disseminators, with more than 2 million followers on social networks.
Dr. Mau has been collaborating with UNICEF for two years. She has participated in the promotion of multiple central initiatives for the agency, among which the World Breastfeeding Week and the Come Como Campeón y Campeona campaign stand out. In addition, it has contributed to raising funds to address emergencies such as the crisis in Ukraine, Hurricane Otis in Acapulco and the earthquake in Syria and Türkiye.
“UNICEF is much more than an organization; It is a global force that transforms lives. Being named an Ambassador is an enormous privilege because caring for the well-being of children means guaranteeing a stronger future full of opportunities. I am excited to be part of this journey to Help new generations reach their full potential“said the medical specialist.
Among the responsibilities that Dr. Mau must assume in his new role are the fight against misinformation around children’s health and the promotion of healthy eating habits. These actions will be of great help to combat the serious health problems that afflict the youngest population in the Mexican Republic. The National Health and Nutrition Survey estimates that more than 12 million inhabitants between 5 and 19 years of age are overweight and obese. In parallel, more than 55% of Mexican households suffer some degree of food insecurity.
