The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has registered more than 500,000 Ukrainian citizens leaving the country as a result of the Russian invasion. The information was given this Monday by the United Nations High Commissioner for the matter, Filippo Grandi, in a post on Twitter.
Earlier, UNHCR had reported a figure of 422,000 refugees and more than 100,000 internally displaced persons. Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania, so far, are the main recipients of this flow of refugees, explained the United Nations body, through the social network.
Previously, Grandi had urged Ukraine’s neighboring countries to keep “the doors open” to anyone seeking safety and security. UNHCR and the Ukrainian government have warned in recent days that up to 5 million people, almost 10% of the national population, are expected to leave the territory.
The spokeswoman for the UN Refugee Agency in the United Kingdom, Laura Padoan, said, also on Twitter, that information about Ukrainian citizens who are prevented from getting on trains while fleeing the Russian offensive is being verified.
According to the Ukrainian government, since the beginning of the crisis in the Crimea and Donbas regions in 2014, 1.5 million internally displaced persons have been registered in the country.
