Democracy has died in the United States, but not in the world, nor among people of good will. Maintaining it depends on the institutions and also on each of us. Wars – and this is a war against democracy – are not won by hiding or retreating, but by facing the problem.
Democracy is dead in the United States. At least it is the sign acquired by the new presidency of Donald Trump. Owner of both legislative chambers, the justice that was rigged in the previous mandate, by a delirious government and with the support of technological entrepreneurs as large and multimillionaire as they are dishonest, can act as he pleases. And so he promises and has begun to practice it. And the most terrifying thing if possible is to see him operate amidst applause, with the enthusiasm of millions of people who voted for him and the cowardice of many governments and institutions that are the ones who can and have to stand up to him.
A significant fact is that the magnates Mark Zuckerberg (Meta Facebook), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Tim Cook (Apple), Sundar Pichai (Google) and, of course, Elon Musk (X) occupied a prominent place in the Capitol event , relegating several members of the government to less visible areas. They hope to get rich. Like the president himself. In fact, it is what marks the profile of this government (add the support with counterparts from pharmaceutical companies, banks and automobile companies). People so powerful as to affect the lives of many people if they put their mind to it, acting at the same time.
The first measure that certifies the end of democracy in the US has been the pardon of 1,600 convicted for the assault on the Capitol that Trump himself instigated. A country that – from the outset – allows a criminal to be a candidate and elected president, among whose violations of legality is having attempted to take over by force an institution like the Capitol, has a serious problem. Trump and his court have taken advantage of it. From now on everything goes in that country and I trust that this is how it will be.
That the world was going to be dominated by idiots, carefully cultivated for this purpose, was something foreseeable for years, but with some executive power not to the point of becoming, by their will, cannon fodder for those who use them. This is the work of the prototype of a genuine idiot who works against his interests. Of course, the lack of answers to specific problems that liberal democracies have not resolved cannot be ignored, but nothing justifies the selfish selfishness that has caused this tragedy.
We will all pay for it. Unless the governments that represent us tackle the problem head-on and act with the same forcefulness. Trump began signing orders as soon as he arrived at the Oval Office. Very decisive are those that directly affect the health of citizens around the world: the deregulation of regulations to tackle climate change in a prominent place. Absolute end to several of them, such as the reduction of polluting emissions or aid for renewables or electric cars. Production and profit will take precedence in the US. Even in Spain the local ultras have the same opinion as the Americans. The health of millions of people does not matter to them. Another of his shock decrees is to leave the WHO, a true outrage that is explained because he does not want restrictions. Human life ceases to have value for these people. This has been the case for a long time, since the pandemic with complete clarity, and Trump, like Bolsonaro or here Ayuso, demonstrated it. It is the life of the less fortunate without a doubt. And there are millions of them who have voted for him or who vote for similar politicians in other countries.
In his speech, Trump said, however, that they would eradicate chronic diseases so that Americans’ children grow up healthy. Fighting science, as it does, and removing firewalls to the risks consequent to bad practices against life? How one can be an idiot cum laude to the point of believing him is what truly astonishes.
Anti-LGBT measures also in the involutionist program, all diversity. There will only be men and women, heterosexuals, as God commands, that god who allows satraps to skip all the commandments of morality, including the right to life and health of others.
The country built by immigrants only wants them rich. The deportations were serious, of course. Millions of beings – victims included – applaud this new setback to human rights. Late this Tuesday the wild chase has already begun. Donald Trump’s Government has given way to immigration raids on schools, colleges and churches in the United States. In exchange, they offer us their valid model: see the sample of attendees at the inaugural event, from Milei to Abascal. That model is absolutely unproductive for everyday life.
The expansionist assault on the countries that Trump wants, for economic interests, is another fact that he announces again without fissures. The crusades return with Donald, the Conqueror. And the trade war the same. Trump plans to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products next week. We, the Europeans, are behind. And the Spaniards even more so if Trump’s wires of ignorance get crossed again. In responses to journalists he spoke of establishing 100% tariffs on the BRICS. including Spain among them, when the acronym comes from its main components: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and the S is from the latter country, not from Spain. Arbitrariness will be another characteristic of the Trump government. The Spanish ultras have signed up. Ayuso, of course, has read her piece of paper in front of the microphones, putting herself on the doormat for the Republican president: “I will personally take care” of explaining to Trump that not all Spaniards are BRICS, she said. We are none, you cannot be arrogant and illiterate without falling into ridicule. Or yes? Maybe, the entire PP blames Sánchez! of Trump’s mistake and its possible consequences in high tariffs.
We will talk about wars. A precarious ceasefire in the genocide of the Gazans, lifting sanctions against Israeli settlers who burned Palestinian homes. He also plans to fix Ukraine, in his own way and probably in Putin’s way. Let us note here, however, as Olga Rodríguez develops in her analysis for ElDiario.es, that Trump has asked for 5% military spending from the members of the Atlantic Alliance, compared to the current 2% commitment. And this will force NATO member countries to invest less in social policies. The rivalry with China is another hot spot. Power and money as the axis in everything.
And this can be addressed with the fear that they are calling caution. Even histrionic Elon Musk’s Nazi salute is being softened. Large and small media outlets, national and international, refuse to describe the one perpetrated by Trump’s “best friend” as a fascist greeting: they call it a “strange gesture,” “controversial,” which “he seems to do.”
The chasm that Trump voters have opened for their entire country will have to be resolved there. Hopefully, with logic, many stupid people will abruptly wake up from sleep. They will lull them to sleep with lies, it is true, like that about the eradication of chronic diseases without science. But the rest of those affected in the world must face all this with forceful actions. Many are too cowardly or too involved, but by power, of course something can be done. Giving in to bullying is the last thing because it grows: it is a monster that always asks for more.
Of course, the assets of the oligarchs who support Trump can be frozen, just as was done with the Russians during the invasion of Ukraine. The damage is now much more extensive. Measures against the dollar are also possible: the BRICS would not be, after all, a bad shock measure, if Europe does it as a bloc. Or the EU by itself, which is asking for the moon from that mastodon. Without a doubt, it is moving forward in a large-scale conflict where Trump and his team do not hesitate to use force. In fact, Trump’s entire speech has been one of “extreme violence” as described by the French newspaper Liberation on the front page (unlike, of course, the surrender of the Spanish media sewer). But before force, firmness is a great deterrent argument. Put the cards on the table. Trump seems sick with hatred, something that prevents him from fully enjoying the victory. But the evil that is prepared to export is not just hatred, it is arrogance, injustice, tyranny. Impunity for major criminals, inequality, revenge, autocracy in short, fascism.
Democracy has died in the United States, but not in the world, nor among people of good will. Maintaining it depends on the institutions and also on each of us. Elon Musk’s Nazi salute has angered many people and what comes after saluting is infinitely worse when they invade everything. Wars – and this is a war against democracy – are not won by hiding or retreating, but by facing the problem.
