The peacekeeping mission of the UN in the south of Lebanon (FINUL) denounced this Friday that on October 22, a group of Israeli soldiers “shot” against a blue helmet observation post in the village of Dhayra, southern Lebanon.
In a statement, UNIFIL denounced that while Israeli soldiers They carried out “cleaning operations of nearby homes” to their post in Dhayra, they targeted the position of the UN troops, who they had to retreat “to avoid being shot at.”
The UN mission denounced that the Israeli Army “has repeatedly demanded that UNIFIL vacates its positions along the Blue Line“, the dividing line between Lebanon and Israel and where the blue helmets are stationed to monitor the border strip.
Likewise, he repeated that Israel “has deliberately damaged camera, lighting and communications equipment in some of those positions”, while insisting that, “despite the pressure being exerted on the mission” UNIFIL troops “continue at their posts and carrying out their tasks.”
The UN mission later said in another statement that on October 23 “a medical center at a UNIFIL position in Beit Leif was hit by a projectile or rocket of unknown origin, which caused damage to buildings.” In addition, he listed a series of incidents “of unknown origin” in which “No peacekeepers were injured.”
Since the beginning of Israel’s ground invasion of southern Lebanon, the blue helmets They have observed clashes in the villages of Alma al Shaab, Aitaroun, Bint Jbeil, Hanin, Houla, Kunin, Labbouneh, Markaba, Maroun al Ras, Meiss al Jabal, Ras Naqoura and Yaroun, the note added.
“We will continue to fulfill our surveillance and information tasks,” added the mission, currently commanded by Spain, which reminded the Israeli army and “to all the actors” –in reference to the Shiite group Hezbollah– its obligations to ensure safety of United Nations personnel and property.
Furthermore, he insisted that “any deliberate attack against them constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” which ended the month-long war fought in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah.
Last October 20, UNIFIL again accused Israel of “deliberately” demolishing an observation tower and perimeter fence from one of its positions in the south of the country, on the border with Israel, actions that have been repeated since the Israeli Army began its ground invasion at the beginning of the month.
