Murcia City Council develops a line of support and promotion of volunteering as a form of participation, solidarity and citizen involvement
The Local Government Board of the Murcia City Council approves a collaboration agreement with the University of Murcia for the incorporation of university students into municipal projects of shared accommodation with the elderly, valid for four years, extendable for another four years.
The purpose of this agreement is that university students displaced in Murcia to pursue official studies at the UMU participate in municipal projects of shared accommodation with different groups to promote solidarity and mutual aid.
The project encompasses both accommodation shared with older people (former coexistence program between generations) and those shared with adults with disabilities, according to municipal sources in a statement.
Thanks to this agreement, young students will have free accommodation in the homes of the elderly and adults with functional diversity. In exchange, the participating students will offer company, mainly at night, and will collaborate in different tasks, such as accompanying them on their journeys, buying food or supporting them in carrying out administrative procedures, among other basic daily actions of people seniors and adults with disabilities who benefit from the program.
With this action, the City of Murcia develops a line of support and promotion of volunteering as a form of participation, solidarity and citizen involvement.
Specifically, the Social Services area maintains a line of action aimed at older people who find themselves in a situation of unwanted loneliness and isolation, either because they lack relatives or because they, due to their personal or geographical situation, they do not maintain coexistence relations with them. This fact has a negative impact on the interaction of the elderly person in the environment, even more so when their physical difficulties and their limitations in personal autonomy are increasing.
