Ukraine crisis, Gergiev takes no position: he will not direct The Queen of Spades
The hoped-for stance of the Russian master Valery Gergiev, always considered close to Putin, against the invasion of Ukraine it has not arrived. At least until now. Therefore, for the mayor of Milan, Beppe Salawho is also president of the Teatro alla Scala Foundation, it is excluded that he will be able to get on the podium at La Scala on March 5 to direct The Queen of Spades. Sala, together with the superintendent of Piermarini, Dominique Meyerhad asked Gergiev to strongly condemn the invasion, on pain of the possibility of performing in the theater, after the premiere of the opera which was held on February 23, the day before the outbreak of the conflict.
“The teacher did not respond,” Sala said on the sidelines of the inauguration of the IULM academic year. “I – he specifies – did not ask for any abjuration but I asked for one distanced from war, which is a little different. I see that other people in the art world, like Netrebko, have expressed themselves in this way, and many in the world of sports too. “” I don’t want to judge. What I know, I asked the superintendent a moment ago, is that Gergiev has left, he has not answered – explains Sala – we will see what will happen on March 5 when the concert should be held but at this point I do not think there will be. ‘”.
