In the Ukraine war, the Ukrainians fight against the invasion of the Russian military forces. Not always by force of arms – also with words.
Kherson (Ukraine) – The Ukrainian population has survived in the war since the February 24 invasion of Russia. Russia itself describes the Ukraine war as a “special operation”. The Russian media must not speak or write about war. Just recently, an editor on Russian live TV protested against Vladimir Putin’s actions and his portrayal of the escalating conflict.
On the ground in Ukraine, Russian soldiers are faced with a populace that refuses to surrender easily. So it turns out in the video posted on the platform tik tok was released, apparently an elderly Ukrainian woman in front of Russian soldiers and tells them her opinion.
Elderly woman yells at Russian soldiers: ‘Didn’t invite you to come here’
The video is said to show an incident in the Ukrainian port city of Cherson, which is in the Russian advance area north of the annexed Crimea. An elderly woman believed to be Ukrainian faces two Russian soldiers. “We had everything! And we can deal with our government on our own,” the woman confronts the two hooded men armed with guns, who react only sparsely to the accusatory words.
“We didn’t invite you to come here,” shouts the woman, who wears the colors of the Ukrainian flag on her shoulder bag. It is a statement that partially contradicts the Russian government’s narrative – after all, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukraine should be liberated from his supposedly Nazi government.
The fact that the locals then turn against those who are supposed to free them stands in stark contrast to the Russian portrayal. Allegedly, Russian soldiers were even lied to about the background to their deployment in Ukraine before they went to war. The authenticity of the video has not yet been confirmed by independent sources.
German comments can also be found in the comment column of the video, which has meanwhile been viewed more than 2.1 million times. Most are in favor of Ukraine. One user writes: “Respect for courage.” Another writes: “Great woman.” Another writes in English: “I can’t even understand three words of what this woman says loudly, but she has my respect .” However, among the comments there are also users who sympathize with the soldiers: “Respect to [die] Soldiers. Really professional. Permit [alles über sich] fare.”
The Russian image of the war in Ukraine is crumbling among its own population
It seems very important for Russia to give its people the impression that the war in Ukraine is legitimate. The words invasion and war are no longer allowed in reporting in Russia in this context. Meanwhile, the Russian military in the already occupied regions of Ukraine must be prepared for partisan warfare, which experts estimate could last a very long time.
Since a new law was passed in Russia for this purpose, the Russian media landscape has changed. “We are in contact with many journalists in Russia who are really panicking and afraid,” reports Christian Mihr, Managing Director of Reporters Without Borders.(mda)
