Such a document is the first step that would allow Ukraine to become a candidate for membership of the European Union in June.
The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, delivered on Monday the questionnaire to receive the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union (EU), a step that brings kyiv closer to its membership of the bloc.
“Another step on Ukraine’s European path,” said the EU’s ambassador to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas. On his Twitter account, he has reported that he has personally received the document delivered by Zelensky, which the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, gave him ten days ago.
“Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures to be taken and at an extraordinary speed,” added Maasikas, who shared photos of the moment Zelensky handed him the questionnaire.
Such a document, which is the centerpiece of the opinion prepared by the European Executive to give its opinion on the options of a candidate country to access the community club, would allow Ukraine to become a candidate for membership of the European Union in June 2022, as and how they expect it to be from the Ukrainian Executive.
A meeting of the European Council will take place in June to decide whether to approve Ukraine’s status as a candidate country for EU membership. During his trip to kyiv last week, von der Leyen promised to speed up Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
