Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina announced on Monday its intention not to play the Monterrey Open-2022 so as not to face players identified with Russian -or Belarusian- nationality, as a protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Svitolina refused to face Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in the first round. Svitolina warned that she would maintain that position until the tennis authorities decided not to accept “Russian or Belarusian citizens except as neutral athletes.”
Finally, the Ukrainian decided to participate in the contest after the WTA statement that tennis players from Russia and Belarus could not represent their country
This Tuesday, both tennis players were face to face on the court. Svitolina (15 in the world) debuted with a victory after defeating Potapova (115) 6-2 and 6-1.
At the end of the game, there was a respectful greeting between both athletes.
