The authorities of the United Kingdom sentenced this Wednesday to a sentence of at least 16 years in prison to Oliver Mailey, who murdered his 7-week-old son (month and a half) in the English town of Burnley.

baby’s death
According to British newspapers, the events occurred in November 2021. On November 27, Oliver Mailey, 26, stayed at home to care for his one-and-a-half-month-old baby, Abel-Jax Mailey, while his partner worked.
A few hours later, Mollie Gorton, the child’s mother, received a video call from her partner informing her that the baby had become strange after eating.
At that point, the mother asked Mailey to show her baby. It was there that she saw him weakened in her crib and asked her to call an ambulance or take him urgently to the hospital.
Little Abel, according to the Daily Mail, was taken to Blackburn Royal Hospital, from where he was transferred to Manchester Children’s Hospital. Nevertheless, the minor died on November 30 when doctors withdrew life support.

According to the BBC, the minor underwent a post-mortem examination to find the cause of his sudden death. A report from the Prosecutor’s Office stated that baby Abel died after being shaken severely, causing severe brain damage.
Doctors determined that the minor’s injuries “were inflicted with the same force as a car accident,” The Mirror newspaper reported.
The minor also had other previous injuries to his ribs. and in the brain that would have occurred between four and 10 days before his death.
The baby’s parents were captured and charged with grievous bodily harm and murder. The man was silent for a year, until in December 2020 he admitted that he killed little Abel even though he never meant to hurt him.

According to statements the man gave at a 2020 hearing, he did shake the baby in a moment of anger. He said the baby wouldn’t stop crying, so he shook it hard.
“I held the baby and shook it back and forth ‘maybe five times’ (…). ‘It was a moment of madness. I tried to calm him down, rock him. He wouldn’t stop crying. He had changed her diaper, had given her a bottle, all that, ”the man recounted, according to the Daily Mail.
Immediately, the baby stopped breathing and turned gray. And despite the fact that he was taken to the hospital, he died due to the seriousness of the injuries caused.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Forcibly shaking a one- or two-year-old infant or child can cause severe brain trauma. Shaking the child can destroy their neurons and “prevent the brain from receiving enough oxygen.”

“I didn’t mean to hurt Abel. I know he is very bad. It eats me up every day,” said the man.

The judge who sent him to prison affirmed that Mailey preferred to lie to save himself, instead of answering for the injuries caused to his son.
“As the father of Abel-Jax, Oliver Mailey was in a trusted position, there to provide love, support and care. That day, Mailey abused that trust in the most violent and horrifying ways. He carried out a shocking attack, which tragically led to the death of Abel-Jax,” Jane Webb, a detective with Lancashire Police Major Investigation Team, was quoted as saying by The Mirror.
