LONDON (Reuters) – The UK economy grew strongly in November to finally surpass the size seen just before the first Covid-19 lockdown, official data showed on Friday.
The world’s fifth-largest economy grew 0.9% in November – ahead of the latest wave of Covid-19 infections and restrictions on many businesses – a much higher-than-expected reading that leaves it 0.7% above its record level. in February 2020, the British statistics agency said.
Economists consulates by Reuters projected growth of 0.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in November.
“It’s fantastic to see the size of the economy return to pre-pandemic levels in November – proof of the determination and courage of the British people,” said Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.
The British economy shrank by more than 9% in 2020, one of the biggest losses among rich countries in the world due to the pandemic.
