The UGT union and the Uber Eats delivery platform have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to contribute to improving the conditions of people who work on digital platforms in Spain, as reported this Thursday by both companies in a joint statement.
The agreement pursues the objective of improving working conditions throughout the delivery sector with special attention to workplace safety, training and collective representation.
This agreement was signed during 46th International Congress of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and is developed under the framework of the global alliance between the Federation and Uber.
Specifically, with regard to people who carry out work on platforms, UGT and Uber Eats have committed to discussing and agreeing on measures to improve their safety and protect their health, while guaranteeing equal opportunities between men and women.
Additionally, Uber Eats has agreed “not to discriminate when making service offers, all in strict compliance with European Union data protection regulations.”
Regarding the logistics companies that collaborate with Uber Eats, the company has agreed «that its partners comply with safety and hygiene regulations and take the necessary measures to train their employees in matters of protection and occupational risks.”
The delivery platform has also taken responsibility for requiring its partners to organize their activity within the framework of a collective agreement, as well as guaranteeing their collective representation rights.
They open social dialogue
Finally, UGT and Uber Eats have agreed to meet at least twice a year to maintain social dialogue and share information about their collaboration, with the aim of continuing to identify areas for improvement.
However, the agreement will be valid for two years from its signature, which may be extended before its end if both entities so consider.
The director of Institutional Relations of Uber Eats in Spain, Matias Weiszhighlighted that “this agreement reflects the commitment of UGT and Uber Eats to improving the working conditions of all people who operate in the ‘delivery’ sector.” “But this is only a first step, we hope to continue working with UGT in the coming years to ensure that the sector grows in a sustainable and fair way for everyone,” he added.
On the other hand, the Secretary of State for Transport of the Federation of Services, Mobility and Consumption of UGT, Diego Buenestado, has celebrated this agreement “which promotes social dialogue as a tool to improve the conditions of those who work in the ‘delivery’ sector.” »Starting from the premise that we still have some differences, we can talk and agree,” he considered.
