“After discussions with the parties, my office shared a new proposal regarding the gradual opening of roads, but the Houthi militia informed us that they do not accept the proposal,” Grundberg announced, calling on all parties to participate urgently and constructively with the United Nations efforts to reach an agreement on the opening of roads in Taiz and the governorates. the other so that all Yemenis can begin to feel the tangible benefits of the truce in their daily lives.
In this context, Yemen’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdullah Al-Saadi, accused the terrorist militias of circumventing the truce file and blackmailing the international community, by prolonging consultations and disavowing them from opening roads.
In his speech before the Security Council, Al-Saadi reiterated the full implementation of the terms of the armistice, including lifting the siege on the city of Taiz completely before moving on to discuss any other files.
Al-Saadi said: “Houthi militias have committed violations of the armistice on various fronts by creating military sites, mobilizing, repositioning, military mobilization, transferring equipment, smuggling weapons, and continuing to bombard residential neighborhoods in Taiz, Marib, Hodeidah and other Yemeni areas.”
Al-Saadi explained, “The Houthi militia did not name its negotiating team on the Taiz file for more than 6 weeks, and then refused to engage in talks to open the main roads and insisted on discussing secondary roads, and then rejected the proposals of the Special Envoy despite the envoy’s travel to Sana’a in an attempt to persuade the leadership of this issue.” The militias, this behavior shows their lack of seriousness and their insistence on prolonging the consultations in order to circumvent this truce and blackmail the international community.”
Al-Saadi added, “What we are witnessing today is nothing but a repetition of the procrastination shown by these militias since the signing of the Stockholm Agreement in 2018.”
Al-Saadi called on the international community and the Security Council to act urgently to pressure the Houthis to seize peace opportunities, fulfill their obligations under the armistice, and open the main roads in Taiz without conditions, which would make a difference in alleviating the human suffering of the residents of this city, and an indication of their seriousness to accept a settlement. Political, as peace requires a real partner, sincere intentions, and serious work, which the Houthis have not shown yet.
Al-Saadi stressed the need for the issue of prisoners and detainees to remain among the priorities and concerns of the United Nations, the Special Envoy and the Security Council, and that efforts should continue to release them and put an end to the obstacles created by the Houthi militia towards this humanitarian issue.
