Two veteran triathletes die at the Torremolinos World Championships

Two athletes, one from the United Kingdom (57 years old) and another from Mexico (79), died this Thursday of a heart attack during the celebration of the first day of the Torremolinos-Andalusia Triathlon World Championship. Both were taking part in the veteran category test (Sprint Age Groups) that took place from 2:30 p.m.

This was announced by the World Triathlon, the head of the international meeting of this sport that takes place in the city of Malaga, through a publication on its social networks, consulted by Europa Press. The test combines swimming, cycling and running disciplines.

The events took place just a few minutes apart, with both athletes collapsing in what was initially certified as a heart attack at the expense of what the autopsies indicated. The medical services that controlled the test could not do anything in the face of the sudden nature of both cases.

“It is with deep sadness that we can report that two participants (one from Mexico and the other from Great Britain) have died in the Torremolinos-Andalucía AG Distance Sprint Triathlon World Championships, which were held today, October 17,” the organizers confirmed in their social networks.

The World Champion conveys “her deepest condolences to their respective families, friends, National Federations and the entire triathlon family”; At the same time, they point out that World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation and the Local Organizing Committee “are in contact with their families to provide all the necessary support in these difficult and sad times.”
