two earthquakeshave shaken the south of Cuba this Sunday in a matter of hours, as reported by American geologists, cited by AFP. At the same time, the island’s authorities have added that no tsunami warning has been issued and that no deaths have been reported at the moment.
While the first of the two tremors has been estimated at a magnitude of 5.9 and happened 14.2 kilometers deep in the ocean, the second of them has been at 6.8 magnitude and 23.5 kilometers deep, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The state newspaper ‘Granma’ has reported that the earthquake has been felt throughout the Caribbean island nation. “Here people quickly went out onto the street because the ground was moving very strongly,” said a witness in statements to AFP, and in reference to the first tremor. “I felt it very strongly, really, and my wife is a nervous wreck,” he added.
The United States Tsunami Warning System has stated that none has been issued of tsunami.
The tremor occurred as Cuba is still recovering from Hurricane Rafael, which hit the west of the country as a Category 3 storm, leaving residents without power for two days. Likewise, last October, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Santiago de Cuba without causing damage.
Previously, in January 2020, another strong earthquake of magnitude 7.7 was recorded in the Caribbean Sea and was felt in several Cuban provinces, causing the evacuation of buildings in the capital Havana, with no damage reported.
