Firefighters in the United States faced “extremely dangerous” conditions as they tried to save a population of 8,000 people, as lightning threatened to fan a fire that killed at least two people and became the largest in California this year.
Hundreds of troops are taking part in the fight against the “McKinney” fire, which has spread to more than 22,000 hectares near the border with Oregon, forcing thousands to flee their homes.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued a warning of lightning without rain on Monday.
“These conditions can be very dangerous for firefighters,” said Calfire, a website that collects fire-related information from several government agencies. The winds can be very erratic and very strong, causing the fire to spread in any direction.”
California, as with much of the western United States, is experiencing its worst drought in more than a thousand years.
