Two dead and five injured after ‘short chase’ with wrong-way driver on A28

A wrong-way driver caused a fatal accident on the A28 in the night from Saturday to Sunday by colliding head-on with an oncoming car. The driver of the vehicle the wrong-way driver collided with, a 35-year-old woman, died on the spot from her injuries. The wrong-way driver, a 30-year-old man, was also killed. Five others were injured in the accident that took place at Hooghalen in Drenth. That reports the police on Sunday morning

Around 00.30 hours, the police received several reports that a wrong-way driver was driving at high speed on the A28. Officers tried to force the wrong-way driver to stop, which also seemed to work near Assen. However, when officers wanted to check the driver, he took off at high speed, again driving wrongly. “A short chase has taken place,” the police said.

Officers then tried to stop traffic and warn, but near Hooghalen the vehicle collided head on with an oncoming vehicle. Three other vehicles were also involved in the accident. Five occupants of those vehicles were injured. They have been transferred to the hospital.

The police carried out investigations of witnesses and traces, as a result of which the A28 was closed in both directions for hours last night. The road is now open to traffic again. The police are calling on witnesses to come forward, and also ask people who have dashcam images of the wrong-way driver or the collision to show these images to share
