Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on Monday that in the first four days of the year more than 2,000 irregular migrants were identified and 80 human traffickers in operations carried out in 27 provinces of the country.

The number of identified irregular migrants peaked in 2019 at more than 454,000, decreased to about 122,000 in 2020, but began to increase again to almost 162,000 in 2021 and about 285,000 in 2022.

In 2023, almost 67,500 Afghan irregular migrants and about 56,000 Syrians were identified, followed by almost 18,000 Palestinians and 13,000 Moroccans.
