Turkey’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai organized a mini-exhibition on hand-woven Turkish carpet weaving and production methods, under the supervision of Ahmed Sinar, president and founder of Cinar Rugs International, and in the presence of a large number of people interested in hand-woven Turkish carpets. Ahmed Senar reviewed the history of the Turkish carpet industry over time, pointing out that each time period has its own mark that distinguishes the carpets during which it was woven, as the craftsmen excelled in highlighting the features of the different historical eras through the drawings and designs that decorate the carpets.
He pointed out that Turkish handmade carpets are distinguished from others by the number of knots, as Turkish carpets can be distinguished by the presence of two knots, while Azerbaijani and Iranian carpets, for example, are distinguished by the presence of only one knot. It even has multiple uses, such as heating the Turkish tent by wrapping it on the walls, or using it as a mattress or cover.
Regarding the reality of hand-woven carpets at the present time with the spread of industrial carpets, Sinar said: “There is still demand for handmade carpets, as it has special customers, due to its high cost, so 99% of Turkey’s exports of carpets to Dubai are from the category of Industrial carpets, the prices of handmade carpets are very high, ranging in cost from 10 thousand to 100 thousand dollars, and it takes a period of six months to five years to complete, depending on the area of the carpet required.”
